Does anyone have thoughts on "pre-admissions" events for PhD applicants? How connected are they to actual admissions? I'm sure it's a good sign to be invited, but not sure how excited I should be.

Hi JD! What sorts of "pre-admissions" events are you thinking about? Like open houses? This is a good question and I'm going to have to think on it. Though, in my experience, more general events like open houses are not too connected to actual admissions (i.e., your chances of gaining admission into a program do not measurably increase by attending these general events). However, there may be some nuance depending on discipline.

Thanks, Margaret. Here's how the event is described in the invitation I received: "You are a top candidate for admission to XXXX’s PhD program in XXXX. As a top candidate, you are invited to join us for our virtual Pre-Admissions Welcome Event on..." The event includes 1:1 conversations with faculty (they don't characterize it as an interview). I also know that others have already received official rejections from this program. I think I'm just looking for positive signs!

Based on what you've described here (not knowing anything about the program/discipline to which you applied), I would take this as a positive sign.
